Mexico is a country blessed with some of the richest cultural and spiritual sites in the world, mainly due to the famed Aztecs and Mayans, with so many temples and pyramids to explore. But while those sites have become famous tourist destinations, there are are a myriad of spiritual places hidden in the jungles of Mexico, some of them so mysterious and possibly ancient, that their origins are unknown. That’s the case of a site located at a 90-minute drive from the beautiful beach city of Puerto Vallarta.
Known as “The King’s Pond”, for legend has it that king Nayar, the leader of the Cora peoples around the year 1500 who was able to resist the Spanish incursions into the mountains and preserve his kingdom, bathed in the natural pond in this site, whose waters had the reputation of having healing properties. When he died, his remains were preserved and venerated in a cave in the mountains, which many believe was located, precisely here.
Another lesser known bizarre story, recounts that in the 80s, the governor of the state sent a helicopter to retrieve a large strange invaluable object from this site, further cloaking it in mystery.
With the construction of the new Puerto Vallarta - Guadalajara highway that passes close to the site, thousands of crafts and ancient artifacts have been retrieved. Objects that perhaps will never make it to the public eye, for their ackowledgement as archaeologically important would halt the highway’s construction, bringing financial and political repercusions to investors.
To this day, the Wixarika peoples still do spiritual pilgrimages to The King’s Pond and have altars placed on the site. Archaeologists believe that it was also a pilgrimage site for the Tecoxquines peoples, the closest ancestors to the Wixarika, yet, according to the Wixarika’s own legends, the site is vastly more ancient, and attributing it by giants.
Visitors to this spiritual place can sense the remnants of an ancient temple, reminiscent of the awe-inspiring Teotihuacan pyramids.
To put this into context, when the famous Aztecs arrived to the valley of Mexico, the pyramids of Teotihuacan, the biggest pyramids in the American continent, had long been abandoned, and the remains covered in vegetation were still so impressive, that the Aztecs named it Teotihuacan, “The Place of the Gods”, or “The Place Where Men Become Gods”. It was also believed by the Aztecs that Teotihuacan was made by the Toltecs, translated as “The Masters”, a Mexican peoples of a mysterious origin, which according to early 20th century Theosophists, were a subrace of the mythical Atlanteans.
In today’s world many think of the ancient civilizations as superstitious and foolish, but for those of us who cultivate spirituality and who have pursued a spiritual journey around the world, these ancient sites played with some powerful energies that the sensitive, and sometimes the not-so-sensitive visitor can feel even today. Energies which are capable of helping us transcend our human condition, and in a spiritual site like this one, which gets perhaps a dozen visitors per day only, these energies, unlike in other more famous archaeological sites of Mexico, are still pretty active.
